Virtual Institute for Metrology in Chemistry & Biology

A Cost-effective Way of Implementing Traceability Structure in New Zealand

Welcome to the Virtual Institute for Metrology in Chemistry (VIMC) website. VIMC is open to everyone in New Zealand, irrespective of your measurement need, whether you are an industry, academic, regulatory, or a political group. We invite you to join us as we are willing to help you in your measurement and traceability needs. The primary aim of VIMC is to ensure chemical metrology knowledge and services are made available rapidly and easily to users, for the benefit of industry and the environment.

About the Institute

A Virtual Institute for Metrology in Chemistry (VIMC) is being developed in New Zealand, led by Measurement Standards laboratory (MSL), supported by other New Zealand analytical laboratories/institutes and funded by the Ministry of Research Science and Technology (MoRST). VIMC is to ensure that chemical and biological measurement traceability are made available to industry, offering low-cost easy access of metrology service.

VIMC will be a co-ordinated infrastructure designed to link together the geographically scattered centres of excellence and other groups and organisations concerned with analytical measurements and technology. This arrangement is to provide a focal point for information exchange and knowledge transfer between all these organisations and industry. The institute combines the skills of other crown research institutes, leading analytical laboratories and individuals into a national network which supports comparable and traceable measurements. This development will enhance the confidence of New Zealand’s trading partners in the reliability of critical chemical and biochemical measurements made on a wide range of products

VIMC will form a two-tier user-accessible website. The first level is free and contains directories of information; the second level is for members only and will allow access to qualified information and member interactions. The first public release of the website is due by the mid of 2005.

We sincerely hope that the Institute will help to advance both your individual and our collective understanding of metrology in chemistry and biology. Individuals and organisations who contribute to the VIMC are recognised as either members or an awareness group of the institute. These groups provide the institute with the means to respond to arising needs and opportunities.
